La Cañada Flintridge is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 20,318 at the 2000 census. The name for La Cañada Flintridge comes from the Spanish word la cañada, meaning gorge, ravine. In Spanish, this has a tilde (ñ) and is pronounced [la kaˈɲaða]; the English pronunciation is IPA: /ˌlɑːkənˈjɑːdə/. Roughly, it is pronounced "la can yadda" or "la ken yadda". It is not pronounced */ˌlɑːˈkænədə/ as in the country of Canada. "Flintridge" is simply pronounced as the two English words "flint" and "ridge", but does not refer to a ridge made of flint (see history section).
